E3 2015 Linky Post

I love following E3! If I had loads of time, I’d watch all the full press conference videos. I’m weird like that. Unfortunately, I don’t have that kinda time, right now, so I watch summary videos.

Whichever you like, I’ll update links to both below as they become available and I find them. Full vids wherever I find them, summary vids from Polygon / The Verge, and Youtube / various. Linky breakdowns mostly at Destructoid, when available.  If you have a better quality vid, let me know and I’ll update it.

Using a Gamepad on Linux

General tips and resources I’ve come across. I will update this page every now and then. If a section grows large enough, I will make a separate post for it.

Steam Big Picture

Launch games from Steam Big Picture. A controller you thought wasn’t compatible with a game may actually work. When you launch a game using that controller (via BigPicture), Steam will attempt to send an appropriate button mapping of that controller to the game when launching it. This worked, for example, with LIMBO. Of course, the game has to support this and your controller must be known or configured in Big Picture.

XBox One Controller

Support was added in Linux 3.17. I have yet to upgrade my kernel and try it, but I did pick up a controller when they were on sale with that intention. (I don’t have an XBox One, but the controllers are so nice….)

Next Gen Ads: Confident and Mysterious VS Informative

Sony’s leading the next-gen console charge with the PS4 on November 15th. Microsoft will follow with XBox One a week later, on November 22nd. Their marketing departments are, no doubt, firing on all cylinders.

PS4

XBox One

They’re both enjoyable and notably similar: a montage of high-budget, live action, game-related scenes strung together with a music track. But Microsoft’s is a much better commercial because it uses an extra 30 seconds and actually shows people using the console in new ways and shows game footage. Sony’s commercial could be for any console, any set of games, movie, or anything – it simply ends with “Greatness Awaits,” a release date and the PS4 logo. Confident, sure, but not informative at all to the average consumer.
