Nintendo Switch eShop Sales 2018-08-19

This week, I picked up Crypt of the NecroDancer, but haven’t tried it yet. I’ve continued to enjoy Adventure Pals.

The titles are sorted by Metacritic score, if one is available. The score is a convenient metric, but it is by no means the whole picture. I’ve highlighted games I would be interested in, based on a variety of factors, including: Metacritic score, other sources of information, personal taste, amount discounted and final sale price.

To get more info on a game, you can take a look at reviews of the game on other platforms, and also look at the user reviews. Often, especially for Switch, the same game on another platform will have more reviews available. User reviews do not affect the Metacritic score, but can also provide additional insight. I recommend following the link to any game you’re interested in, and doing some additional research.

I grabbed Adventure Pals and first impressions are very positive: polished, responsive platformer with a sense of humour and animation similar to Adventure Time. I also picked up FRAMED Collection based on Destructoid’s Review, but haven’t tried it yet.

Nintendo Switch eShop Sales 2018-06-30

This week has a lot of carry-over from last week, with the notable addition of Axiom Verge, a fantastic metroidvania solely developed by one man. And I do mean “solely,” not just code; he did the code, art, and the throbbing guttural electronic soundtrack (give it a listen)! I thoroughly enjoyed Axiom Verge on Wii U and highly recommend it if you enjoy (or are curious about) the genre.

Super Bomberman R is also on sale, this week. It wasn’t reviewed well at launch, but my understanding is that Konami has continued to support it over the last year with performance upgrades, additional characters and modes – significantly improving it since launch. It received a giant update just a week ago! There are many fans of the Bomberman series. I enjoyed the multiplayer mayhem with friends on Super Nintendo but haven’t played it much since.

I’ve sorted the titles by Metacritic score, if one is available. The score is a convenient metric, but it is by no means the whole picture. When looking at the score, it’s important to consider how many reviews the score is built from. For example, DEEMO with a Metacritic score of 88, is higher than Owlboy with 87, but DEEMO’s score is only based on the minimum of 4 reviews, whereas Owlboy’s score is based on 27 reviews. Take one review from DEEMO and it wouldn’t even have a score.

Where there is a score, I’ve listed the number of reviews the score is based on in parentheses, following the score.

To get more info on a game, you can take a look at reviews of the game on other platforms, and also look at the user reviews. Often, especially for Switch, the same game on another platform will have more reviews available. User reviews do not affect the Metacritic score, but can also provide additional insight. Nintendo Switch eShop Sales 2018-06-21

Top rated titles of this week’s sales are DEEMO, Owlboy, Neurovoider, Battle Chef Brigade, Danmaku Unlimited 3, and Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut; quite the variety in genres! DEEMO is a rhythm game I haven’t really heard much about, but apparently has a big heart. Owlboy is a 2D adventure platformer with gorgeous pixel art. Battle Chef Brigade appears to be composed of a 2D brawler (hunting and getting food) and a match puzzler (cooking), all set in a fantasy world that’s voice acted. Thank you, Adult Swim. Neurovoider and Danmaku are shmup (2D bullet hell shoot-em-up) variants, and Slayaway Camp is a cutesy sliding puzzle horror game. (a …what?)

I have Owlboy on PC but have been waiting for a sale on Switch because I think it’s a perfect match for the system. Battle Chef Brigade looks fun too.

Nintendo Switch eShop Sales 2018-06-17

There’s a bunch sales on the eShop, right now. Who doesn’t like a deal?!

I’m trying something new; I’ve sorted them by Metacritic score, listed the original price, sale price, and percent discounted. These prices are Canadian, but I think the discount percentage is probably the same in the United States. Most of these were advertised as “E3 sales” and only last until Thursday, June 21. The list is taken from the Canadian eShop webpage, and sometimes doesn’t list all sales that are shown when visiting the eShop on the Switch.

Seventy-two items. Remember a time when the eShop was scarce? 🙂 I’ll probably be picking up Pac-Man and Darkest Dungeon. Full list below.

I Pre-ordered a Nintendo Switch. Here’s why….

Nintendo couldn’t have asked for better momentum leading up to the Jan 12th reveal. The 3 minute reveal trailer (filmed here, in Vancouver) had very positive reception. The NES Classic seemed to sell out before release and is still waiting for re-stock. Super Mario Run was their first real entry into the mobile gaming market, heavily promoted by Apple and wildly successful. Most people have already put their Wii U’s away and are eagerly anticipating the next thing from Nintendo.

After eager anticipation and coming home late, I watched the awkwardly translated Nintendo presentation from Tokyo. I came away thinking, “Okay, cool. Some weird stuff and disappointing stuff, but definitely some interesting stuff too. I know I’ll eventually pick one up, but I don’t need to pre-order one. Zelda looks amazing, but I have it pre-ordered for Wii U already.” Even with the extra info online regarding Micro SD and online service details, I felt they didn’t convey enough information to warrant pre-ordering. Vague descriptions that chat is somehow handled through a phone app?? The graphics hardware looks like it’s probably based on the aging Nvidia Tegra X1, and not the upcoming Tegra X2, which is unfortunate if not surprising. Third party support feels apprehensive. And no unbiased impressions about the hardware yet… I figured I should at least wait for those: how comfortable and responsive are the controllers?

I waffled a bit, but obviously, I changed my mind. Here’s why:

Japan. Console gaming has long been on its way out, in Japan. Handheld gaming is where Japan does most of its gaming, and if the presentation from Tokyo is any indication (Square Enix and Atlus providing great initial support), I think Switch will be quite popular, and possibly the next bastion for Japanese games. On top of that, the Switch will not be region-locked, so we don’t even need those games to be published by a North American publisher. Bonus.

E3 2015 Linky Post

I love following E3! If I had loads of time, I’d watch all the full press conference videos. I’m weird like that. Unfortunately, I don’t have that kinda time, right now, so I watch summary videos.

Whichever you like, I’ll update links to both below as they become available and I find them. Full vids wherever I find them, summary vids from Polygon / The Verge, and Youtube / various. Linky breakdowns mostly at Destructoid, when available.  If you have a better quality vid, let me know and I’ll update it.

E3 2013 Impressions and XBox 180

First of all, there were many great looking cross-platform titles, and even cross-generation.

Metal Gear Solid 5

Battlefield 4, Dragon Age 3, Rayman Legends, The Division, Watchdogs, Destiny, Witcher 3, Dark Souls 2

I already wrote about exclusives by the first parties: Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

My take-away message is that XBox One will have lots of great games, but PS4 will be $100 cheaper and have a lot of its own great games Continue reading “E3 2013 Impressions and XBox 180” »

Nintendo E3 2013

Nintendo didn’t have the standard E3 press conference, but had a pre-recorded Nintendo Direct video and game demos at the show. 3rd party support appears to be recoiling from Wii U development, but I’ll be honest, I want pretty much every Nintendo game they showcased. And while I’m being honest, full disclosure, I’m a bit of a Nintendo fanboy.

Nintendo showed all the games they said they would and had one new game reveal, but lets go through these chronologically.

E3 2012 Day 2 – Nintendo

Nintendo’s conference wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t amazing, either.  And I was really wanting it to be amazing.  It was dedicated almost entirely to Wii U, with 3DS receiving an honorable mention. A full 3DS software showcase is planned for the the following day (today, actually). More videos and information can be found at e3.nintendo.com.

Highlights

  • Pikmin 3

Will be launch title.  Can target different parts of enemies for deeper strategy.  Olimar is pointedly missing but 4 other “leaders” are present, allowing you to control 4 different groups.
